Have a look at http://www.w3schools.com/ to gain some HTML and CSS knowledge .
I have the feeling that at the end of the day it depends on the mail-client/browser how the html is rendered 
.
I did not test this theory but you can do some testing like sending to GMAIL use a different mail client etc.
